Biophilic Chandeliers

Het Park Paviljoen is het bezoekerscentrum en restaurant van nationaal park de Hoge Veluwe. Het Park Paviljoen was voor mij de ultieme test casus van mijn afstudeer onderzoek – Biophilic Light Texture. In dit project heb ik, in samenwerking met Beersnielsen lichtontwerpers, een serie van 9 kroonluchters ontworpen die de theorie en kleine experimenten van mijn afstudeer onderzoek op grote schaal in praktijk brengen.

Elke kroonluchter bestaat uit een lasergesneden kap met een patroon van een bladerdak met dieren zoals vogels en eekhoorntjes – en een grid van 20 DMX aanstuurbare lampjes die door de kap een dynamisch licht-schaduw patroon op het gewelfde plafond projecteren. De 20 lampjes worden individueel gedimd volgens een algoritme dat video materiaal van de natuur als basis gebruikt. Zo gaat het geprojecteerde bladerdak bewegen alsof de wind door het gebouw heen waait, en wordt de sfeer en het karakter van het natuurpark ook in het interieur van het Park Paviljoen voelbaar gemaakt.

Dit project heeft in 2019 een DARC award (Categorie Art/Bespoke) gewonnen en een LIT award (categorie Interior Architectural Illumination) gewonnen.

The Park Pavillion is the visitor center and restaurant of nature reserve park “de Hoge Veluwe” in the Netherlands. The Park Pavillion was the ultimate test case for my master thesis – Biophilic Light Texture. In this project, in collaboration with Beersnielsen Lighting designers, I have designed a series of 9 chandeliers, that put the theory and small scale experiments of my master thesis in practice at full architectural scale.

Each chandelier consists of a lasercut shade with a forest canopy pattern with small animals like birds and squirrels – and of a grid of 20 DMX controllable lights that project a dynamic light-shadow pattern through the shade onto the vaulted ceiling of the pavilion. The 20 lights are dimmed individually according to an algorithm that takes video material of nature as an input. The projected forest canopy moves as if the wind is blowing through the building, and extends the atmosphere and character of the nature reserve park into the interior of the Pavillion.

In 2019 this project won a DARC award (category Art/Bespoke) as well as a LIT award (category Interior Architectural Illumination).
